United Nations High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS

Malta is to host a Europe-wide meeting on HIV prevention and mitigation strategies during its six-month stint as president of the European Council next year.

Health Minister Chris Fearne made the announcement while addressing the UN assembly in New York.

The meeting will be organised in collaboration with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and will bring together various technical experts to see how Europe can best achieve the sustainable development goals set during the World Health Assembly.

The Sustainable Development Goals are a set of goals which follow from the UN’s Millennium Development Goals. The third goal, known as SDG 3, aspires to ensure health and well-being for all, including a bold commitment to end epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and other communicable diseases by 2030.

It also aims to achieve universal health coverage, and provide access to safe and effective medicines and vaccines for all.

“Our vision is to have a world in which people living with HIV cam live long, healthy lives while infection rates gradually decline,” Dr Fearne said.
